The M5 southbound has been closed between junctions 25 (Taunton) and 26 (Wellington) due to surface water following today’s thunderstorms, according to National Highways.

Earlier in the day, the motorway was also closed between junctions 14 (Thornbury, Falfield) and 15 (Almondsbury) due to flooding.

In addition, lanes 3 on both the westbound and eastbound sections of the M4 between junctions 17 (Chippenham) and 18 (Tormarton) have been shut after an earlier incident caused damage to the central barrier.

Diversions are currently in place for the M5 closure, and with further heavy rain forecast throughout the afternoon and evening, drivers are being urged to take extra care.

The Met Office has issued warnings for more rain across the South West, and National Highways advises motorists to stay cautious on the region's roads.

David Britton, National Highways' South West Operations Manager, said: "Keeping our roads safe for drivers during difficult weather conditions is a major part of our work and our teams are dealing with a number of weather-related incidents in the region.

"In the meantime, we advise people to check on the weather conditions, plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys.

"If it’s time for your wipers, it’s time to slow down. The roads will be more slippery than usual, so give yourself more time to react – increase the gap between you and the vehicle in front to at least four seconds

“Drivers should look out for standing water, slow their speed and adjust their driving before and after encountering any.”

National Highways have said for up-to-date travel information, National Highways advises drivers to check the website www.trafficengland.com or follow @HighwaysSWEST on X (formerly Twitter).

Real-time assistance is also available via their 24/7 contact centre at 0300 123 5000.
