The guildhall makeover after the completed works
The historic Barnstaple Guildhall has been unveiled in its full splendour following significant renovation works.
The iconic Grade II* listed building, designed by local architect Thomas Lee and built between 1826 and 1828, now stands proudly restored to its neo-Classical grandeur.
Thomas Lee, who is also known for designing Somerset’s Wellington Monument and Arlington Court, left an architectural legacy in the Guildhall that continues to serve the community.
The building, maintained by Barnstaple Town Council, once operated as a courthouse and still holds Town Council meetings and ceremonial events, including the recent Fair Proclamation Ceremony.
It also remains a popular visitor attraction, hosting various events and exhibitions.
The renovation project, which began in February, was made possible through funding from Historic England's Repair Grants for Heritage at Risk and the Government’s Future High Street Fund Programme, administered by North Devon District Council.
The project was undertaken by local firms Pearce Construction, an employee-owned company with expertise in heritage restorations, and Nova Surveyors, who managed the works.
Restoring the Guildhall was not without challenges.
As a pre-1919 listed building, extensive repairs were needed, including replacing sections of the render and three pillars, renovating much of the roof’s lead, the bell’s cupola, stonework on the plinth, window casements, and the clock on the Butcher’s Row side.
Guidance from Historic England and local Conservation Officer Colette Hall helped ensure the work preserved the building's historic character while making it more resistant to North Devon’s weather.
Barnstaple’s Mayor, Councillor Janet Coates, expressed her delight at the restoration: “The Guildhall looks splendid. It was wonderful to have it restored to its former glory in time for the Fair Proclamation.”
The Mayor also emphasised the Town Council’s commitment to ongoing maintenance to ensure the Guildhall remains in excellent condition for years to come.
Future restoration work is already planned, with the next focus being the Council Chamber, a significant space used for Town Council meetings and events.
Visits to the Guildhall can be arranged by contacting Barnstaple Town Council.
