In a follow-up to yesterday’s Gazette report, a new speed camera has been installed on Clovelly Road in Bideford, addressing a rise in traffic collisions.

This measure follows a detailed analysis by Devon County Council (DCC), which has now confirmed the urgent need for enhanced traffic safety, particularly around the Affinity Devon junction.

Over the past five years, Clovelly Road has seen 13 traffic collisions, resulting in 22 injuries, with six of those being serious.

The Affinity Devon junction, located along this route, has been identified as a significant collision hotspot.

The new speed camera aims to mitigate these risks by targeting speed-related issues contributing to the high number of accidents in this area.

A spokesperson for DCC explained: “The new camera on Clovelly Road in Bideford has been put in place by Devon County Council with Devon and Cornwall Police through the Devon & Cornwall Vision Zero South West road safety partnership.

“The Affinity Devon junction was identified as a collision cluster site. And over the last five years this route has seen 13 road traffic collisions, including 22 injuries, with 6 being seriously injured.”

The camera, which became operational this week, will monitor traffic 24/7 in both directions. The decision to install it was made after thorough analysis of collision statistics and discussions between DCC and Devon & Cornwall Police.

The goal is to reduce the number of accidents and injuries by addressing speeding concerns.
