Devon County Council has announced a significant road closure on the A361 Barnstaple Bypass, beginning on September 23.

The road will be closed each night from 7pm to 7am, continuing until October 25, to accommodate essential maintenance and upgrades.

The nightly closures will allow crews to carry out extensive work, including resurfacing the carriageway, replacing French drain material, and removing the existing vehicle restraint system. These improvements are crucial to addressing the road's wear and tear, enhancing safety, and ensuring long-term durability.

Motorists are advised to plan alternative routes during this period, as the night-time closure is expected to cause substantial traffic disruptions.

A Devon County Council spokesperson said: “Overnight closures are currently planned on the A361 between Portmore roundabout and Bishops Tawton roundabout from Monday 23 September to Friday 25 October. The overnight closures will be on weekday evenings from 7pm until 7am but the road will be fully open during daytimes Monday to Friday as well as being open 24 hours a day at weekends. The closures will enable resurfacing, drainage improvements and work on safety barriers on this stretch of road.”

For updated information and details on alternative routes, drivers are encouraged to visit the Devon County Council website or follow local traffic advisories.

The Gazette will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
