A Barnstaple man is currently embarking on a remarkable journey alongside a team of 18 determined individuals from the Armed Forces Para-Snowsports Team (AFPST). Their mission: to conquer the legendary Everest Base Camp while raising vital funds for AFPST athletes.

The Armed Forces Para-Snowsport Team is a vital service charity dedicated to aiding in the recovery of wounded, injured, and sick military personnel and veterans.

As an independent charity, their mission is clear: to ensure that those who have served their country are not forgotten.

Through the transformative power of para-snowsports, they strive to instil a sense of purpose, facilitate success, and rebuild self-confidence among their athletes.

By providing motivation, engagement, and inspiration, they aim to contribute to the restoration of both physical and mental health for those who have served their country.

Conrad Goss, a former military serviceman, found himself facing challenges during his service.

However, he discovered solace and support through AFPST.

Now, driven by a desire to give back, Conrad has set an ambitious target of raising £8,000 for the charity.

AFPST plays a crucial role in empowering individuals with disabilities, offering them opportunities to participate in thrilling sports like skiing and snowboarding.

Conrad's trek is part of a collective effort to ensure that AFPST can continue changing lives for the better.

Conrad said: “This arduous expedition will test our physical and mental strength to the very core, and take many of us to the edge, but our unwavering mission transcends personal achievements.

“We aim to raise significant funds through the AFPST Everest Base Camp Trek campaign, ensuring that our deserving athletes are empowered to reach their full potential and give them something they could only have dreamed of before.”

Conrad revealed that he experienced injuries while serving in various operational tours, including the Falkland Islands, Northern Ireland, Gulf War 1, and other global regions. These experiences subjected him to both mental and physical challenges as a consequence of his service to his country.

Departing from Heathrow on May 1, Conrad and his team are scheduled to return from Kathmandu on May 20. However, due to the small mountain runway in Lukla, Nepal, prone to poor visibility, Conrad and the team were airlifted by helicopter from Kathmandu to ensure their safe journey.

In his latest update, Conrad shared that on day nine (May 14) of their expedition, himself and the team expressed the team's sheer joy at reaching their goal.

Despite the tough odds – where only a few trekkers typically make it to Everest Base Camp – all 18 members of the group have succeeded.

He explained their journey has been tough, with injuries, illness, and mental challenges, but their teamwork and bravery have seen them through.

As they prepare for the return trek, Conrad explained the harsh conditions they're facing, including rough terrain and freezing temperatures as low as -15°C.

He thanked everyone who has supported their charity and urged more donations.
