Hele Cornmill in Ilfracombe is set to open its doors to the public from 11am to 5pm on Sunday, May 12, as part of the National Mills Weekend celebration.

This annual event offers an opportunity for individuals to delve into the UK's rich milling heritage by exploring local windmills and watermills.

The historic Hele Cornmill, dating back to the 16th century, boasts a fully operational 18-foot waterwheel and two sets of stones, one of which is in use.

Constructed in 1525 by Sir John Bourchier, the 1st Earl of Bath, the mill is approaching its 500th anniversary next year.

During the event, visitors can take self-guided tours of the mill and enjoy an informative film illustrating the flour-making process and detailing the mill's fascinating history and its past millers.

Entry to Hele Cornmill is free, offering a unique opportunity for local residents to explore the mill's significance in the community over the centuries.

Attendees will also have the chance to engage with the present miller, as well as purchase cakes crafted from flour ground within the mill.

Expressing anticipation for the event, organisers extend a warm invitation to both locals and visitors alike, especially those unaware of the mill's historical prominence within the community.
