A boxing club in Barnstaple which has doubled its membership over the past year wants to expand.

Barnstaple Amateur Boxing Club (ABC) has asked North Devon Council for planning permission to create the 75 metre square of extra space for a mezzanine floor at its practice venue at Rackfield Court so it can cater for around 60 members.

The club, established in 1955, has been at its current premises for the last 15 years.

Applicant and head coach Graham Davies said the club is for anyone aged eight upwards and had an equal share of young and adult members with a big boost in young people joining in the past 12 months.

Club boxers have competed in Gibraltar and Ireland recently and the club will be hosting its home show in Barnstaple Pannier Market on Saturday 11 May.

The property is within the Barnstaple conservation area, but isn’t listed. No changes will be made to the external appearance of the building.
