The proposed day centre
Age Concern wants to convert a vacant building in Barnstaple into a day centre where elderly and vulnerable people can socialise.
The charity is proposing to add two small extensions to a former shopmobility centre next to the town’s bus station.
Applying for planning permission from North Devon Council, it says its proposal complies with planning policy and that it will be a valuable contribution to Barnstaple and North Devon, reducing loneliness and isolation, improve health and wellbeing and support independent living.
The shopmobility centre, Go North Devon, loaned wheelchairs and scooters to people with mobility problems, but closed last year. Age Concern intends to bring back a loan service and will provide space for wheelchair storage in the extension space and a lobby.
It says the scheme maximises the use of space and provides a cosier atmosphere in living areas.
The charity says older and vulnerable people will be able to enjoy activities, relaxation, socialisation and refreshments in a safe space.
