Bideford masterplan
In Bideford, Torridge District Council has approved plans for the construction of 200 new properties.
Persimmon Homes Cornwall & West Devon, the developer behind the project, will be erecting one to four-bedroom homes on land at Atlantic Park, located off Clovelly Road on the western outskirts of the town.
The development aims to provide not only housing but also a vibrant community space. Plans include 1.4 hectares of open space, featuring amenities such as parks, sports and recreation grounds, a community orchard, and play areas for children of various ages.
Additionally, a new cycleway and footpath will be integrated into the existing infrastructure, enhancing connectivity within the neighbourhood.
“I am delighted that our plans to bring 200 high-quality, affordable new homes to Bideford have been given the green light by Torridge District Council, opening up access to the dream of homeownership for local families,” stated Andy Hill, Managing Director of Persimmon Homes Cornwall & West Devon.
"Our commitment extends beyond mere construction – we are dedicated to creating a thriving community that meets the diverse needs of its residents, with a mix of housing tenures and sizes, helping alleviate pressure on Torridge's housing list while fostering a sense of place," said Mr Hill.
The approval of these plans marks a significant step forward in meeting the housing demand in the area, which includes easing the strain on Torridge's housing list, currently accommodating over 2,000 families.
As part of their commitment to the community, Persimmon Homes Cornwall & West Devon has pledged that 19% of the properties will be allocated to a housing association partner, ensuring accessibility for local residents.
Furthermore, the project has shown a commitment to environmental sustainability, with measures in place to increase biodiversity.
This includes the installation of 100 bird boxes, 100 bat boxes, hedgehog holes in boundary fences, and extensive hedgerow planting.
“We are proud of the sustainable features of the site, from enhancing biodiversity and green spaces to implementing an eco-friendly drainage system, alongside the creation of inviting play areas," Mr Hill continued.
"As we progress with this project, Persimmon Homes is steadfast in our commitment to outstanding construction and engaging with the community, with the goal of creating an enduring positive legacy."
"I am delighted that our plans to bring 200 high-quality, affordable new homes to Bideford have been given the green light by Torridge District Council, opening up access to the dream of homeownership for local families," Mr Hill concluded.
"My thanks go to the project team and Torridge Council officers for their collaborative spirit and constructive efforts towards our shared goals in delivering for local people."
Prior to receiving approval from Torridge District Council, the scheme had garnered support from Bideford Town Council, pending endorsement from Devon County Council Highways. This support was achieved through collaborative efforts between Persimmon and the Highways Authority.
In addition to the development itself, Persimmon Homes Cornwall & West Devon has demonstrated its commitment to the local community through its Community Champions scheme. Last year, the developer donated £1,000 to Shammy Rovers FC, further contributing to the social fabric of Bideford.
With construction set to commence, Persimmon Homes Cornwall & West Devon has remained steadfast in its commitment to outstanding construction practices and community engagement, with the goal of leaving a positive and lasting impact on the local area.
