Torridge District Council has officially announced the start of a the major makeover for the play facilities at Victoria Park in Bideford.

Beginning on Monday, January 22, the existing play area will be closed and cordoned off as local contractors from TK Play embark on initial preparations for the demolition and removal of current play structures and equipment.

The extensive works program is anticipated to run throughout the quieter winter months, concluding by the end of March, with a grand unveiling scheduled just in time for the Easter bank holiday weekend.

The revamped play area will feature a striking high tower at its core, serving as an access gateway to an array of exciting features.

Upon completion, the tower will boast two slides, a fireman’s pole, climbing walls, ladders and various tactile equipment. The project received approval from the council’s planning committee in November, marking a significant step toward the enhancement of recreational spaces in the community.

This collaborative effort between council officers and resident volunteer organisations has been pivotal in championing the project and securing funding for its completion.

The funding includes contributions from Torridge District Council’s capital funding program, a generous £119,000 grant from Bideford Bridge Trust, private fundraising initiatives, a £10,000 contribution from Bideford Town Council and a substantial £150,000 grant from the Government’s Rural Prosperity Fund.

Councillor Lyndon Piper, who serves as the lead member for leisure, said: “It’s fantastic news that the council has been able to support the construction of this exciting new play area with the help of additional funding from the Bideford Bridge Trust, Bideford Town Council, and central government.”

Mr Piper further stressed the collaborative nature of the endeavour, acknowledging the crucial role played by resident groups working alongside council officers. He anticipates the new bespoke play area will be a remarkable replacement for the current facilities, providing a space for children to enjoy for many years to come.
