The South West Regional Championships

Last week, Petroc College hosted the South West Regional Championships for volleyball.

The event included women's teams from Petroc College and Richard Huish College (Taunton) and men's teams from Petroc College, Richard Huish College and Exeter College.

The standard of play was excellent throughout with all games really closely contested.

The women's game was held first, and being just two teams, it was a straight shootout between Petroc and Huish and what an opener it turned out to be with momentum swinging one way and the other.

Petroc took the first set and were looking confident but Huish fought back in the second set, taking it by just two points which led to the all-important third and deciding set. Again, it ebbed and flowed but it was Huish who ended on a high and secured their place as Regional Champions and a spot at the National Champs next April.

Lots were drawn for the men's tournament and first up was Huish v Petroc, again a really closely fought match but Huish were just a tiny bit too strong and won 2-0.  The game between Huish and Exeter was up next and again a really close match going to the third set, this time Exeter just edged it.

One win each from Exeter and Huish. Could Petroc spoil the party? They started strongly against Exeter but unfortunately were outgunned and went down 2-0 eventually. Exeter now deservedly go forward to the Nationals.

A wonderful day of volleyball and some new friendships formed.
