Worst defeat in 65 years for the Grecians

One Devon club is smiling but the other two are feeling very gloomy after a weekend of contrasting fortunes in the world of professional football.

The Pilgrims of Plymouth Argyle returned from the international break with an excellent 2-0 win over Sunderland in the Championship, Morgan Whittaker and Finn Azaz scoring the goals in the first half, but Torquay United suffered a dismal 3-0 defeat at Dartford in the National League South.

The biggest worry, however, is Exeter City, who slumped to their heaviest defeat in 65 years, as they were battered 7-0 at table-topping Bolton Wanderers, extended the Grecians’ winless run to eight league matches, and seven of them have been defeats.

City are just one point above the relegation zone and manager Gary Caldwell conceded: “It’s embarrassing and not good enough from myself, the staff and the players. Everyone has to make sure this is rock bottom.”
