Traditional fair has been running for more than 800 years.
HOLSWORTHY will be celebrating its traditional St Peter’s Fair which kicks off on Saturday and runs until July 12.
The fair began more than 800 years ago and will include six nights of free live music in the Square, a fun fair, exhibitions and competitions.
On the eve of the fair, the elected Portreeve, whose job it was to collect tolls and duties from traders, would hold court.
While the tradition continues up to present day, the focus now is less on tax and more on fun and entertainment.
The fair is also traditionally opened by a ‘pretty maid’, who leaves the church by the belfry door at midday on the first day of the fair.
Lloyd Marshall, branch manager of RGB Building Supplies, the main sponsors of the fair, said: “St Peter’s Fair is always such a popular event that is enjoyed by not only people in the town, but also the North Devon community.
“We are delighted to be able to help ensure they continue by being a sponsor.”
