After 35 years of delving into his family's history, Peter Newcombe has finally published a book on his findings with all proceeds going to Braunton District Museum. An Account of the Motor Vessel Eilian and Her Master Jack Newcombe gives an in-depth study into one of the last sailing schooners and covers the maritime career of her former skipper, Peter's grandfather.Since he was 17 Peter's main hobby has been genealogy and he was ecstatic to discover his grandfather Jack had experienced an interesting life as the master mariner of the schooner Eilian, which was registered in Barnstaple. "My romantic view of Eilian was not shared by my grandfather, to him she was a tool to earn a living," said Peter. The book has gone on sale at Braunton District Museum to celebrate the centenary of Eilian's launch.Peter, 52, from Exeter said: "Like many other would-be authors I did not set out to write a book or to get my research published. But one's aspirations change with the accumulation of time and voluminous records from research."Motivated by the desire to leave a memorial to his family, Peter produced the book himself. "The book was wholly produced by me on my computer. I decided on the layout, font, illustrations and photographs," he said. Peter was also in charge of its publication but due to printing costs decided to produce it for sale as a limited edition. Therefore, only 250 numbered copies are available at the museum.
