Warning follows calls from hoaxers claiming to be from Torridge District Council

Torridge residents are being urged to keep their bank details safe after reports of telephone scams in the area.

Residents have received phone calls from people claiming to represent Torridge District Council (TDC) and are being asked to submit their bank details to receive 'back-dated' council tax refunds amounting to several thousands of pounds.

Although the residents who reported these incidents realised it was a scam, the council is asking people in the area to be cautious.

Councillor David Hurley, lead member for customer services, said: "It is regrettable that fraudsters continue to target our residents with scams aimed at stealing money from them.

"The advice is to remain vigilant and if people have any doubts at all about credibility of any caller they should check first and never reveal financial information to someone they don't know or can't verify."

TDC has said it would never request bank details over the phone. Residents with concerns can call the council on 01237 428700 or report incidents to the police on the non-emergency 101 number.
