A family butcher who keeps Ilfracombe well supplied with choice cuts of meat, sausages and award-winning pies and pasties has been named as the winner of the annual John Fowler Cup.The award for best-dressed High Street shop front is an Ilfracombe Carnival tradition. It was presented to Mike Turton's Family Butchers on Monday morning by the man himself. The carnival is organised by Ilfracombe St John Ambulance and the main parade will take place tomorrow (Thursday.) Mr Fowler said that, aside from the eye-catching window, he and his wife Susan made their choice because of Mike Turton's reputation in the town as an excellent butcher and shopkeeper, making him a deserving winner of the award."It's an honour," said Mr Turton, a finalist in the national Barbecue Chef of The year competition and whose home-made pies have win two silvers and a bronze in a top regional contest sponsored by British Meat."We work hard here in the shop and it's nicely decorated, so it's good for that to recognised."The carnival parade of floats and walkers will form up at the swimming pool car park at Brimlands from approximately 6pm, with judging at 6.30. It moves off at 7.30 and will make its way along the High Street and the sea front. More carnival information is available from Bruce Davies on (01271) 863861.
