SIR - Young people everywhere are being encouraged to participate in song, dance and popular performance of all kinds.

North Devon charity Young Musicians' Support concentrates its efforts on those interested in classical music.

In these days of instant gratification and overnight celebrity, it takes a special child to make the long term commitment required to progress with piano, violin, clarinet or flute.

It also requires a great deal of support from the parent, guardian or teacher. In addition there is the cost of lessons and a good instrument.

For 20 years YMS has helped local families by giving cash awards, loaning instruments, providing expert professional advice and arranging performance opportunities.

In return, YMS has been rewarded by the success of numerous youngsters, some of whom have gone on to specialist colleges and a career in music, but all of whom have gained immeasurably from their experience.
