RESCUE helicopters from RAF Chivenor and RNAS Culdrose and their crews met at the Children's Hospice South West in Fremington on Tuesday in a joint venture for sick children.

Representatives of Chivenor's Search and Rescue squadron flew in with a cheque with the proceeds of their Christmas draw.

Their Royal Navy counterparts flew up from Cornwall to receive it as a boost to their own fund raising efforts.

Culdrose CO Lt Cdr Chris Godwin and his wife Louise lost their baby son Colton last year to spinal muscular atropy. He spent his final months at the Children's Hospice in Fremington and the family were grateful for the support they received.

When plans to create another children's hospice in Cornwall were announced the Culdrose squadron decided it was a worthwhile project for them to support, for Cornwall and in Colton's memory.

The squadron is now organising a charity dinner and auction of donated items and celebrity memorabilia at Culdrose on March 8 to raise money for the Children's Hospice South West 'Precious Lives' Appeal.

Local businesses and others have been contacted to support the initiative and there has already been such a huge response to an appeal for auction items that a website has been set up so anyone can make a bid before the dinner.
