AN exciting new project aimed at helping people with mental health issues become more active and get much more out of life is about to begin in Barnstaple and surrounding areas.Money has become available to provide a range of activities to help people do more, get out and about, improve their social skills and escape from the trap of isolation. The project is being run by the North Devon Mental Health Forum (NDSUF) and has been made possible after a grant from the Devon Community Foundation Sport Relief programme.Sharon Hearn at NDSUF said the activities and trips could include things such as swimming, walking, sports or games, but would depend very much on what the clients themselves wanted to do.Possibilities during the next 12 months could include horse riding, time at the Calvert Trust outdoor adventure centre or even visits to facilities such as the Tarka Tennis Centre. The Forum is also keen for people to use its drop-in service on Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays from 11am-1pm at 112 Boutport Street in Barnstaple, near the Green Lanes car park entrance and junction with Vicarage Street. If you would like to join the activity project or know someone who might benefit, call Sharon or Jo at NDSUF on (01271) 378125 for more information.Other organisations in need of funding can also apply to the Devon Community Foundation on (01884) 235887.
