LOSING two family members within three months is devastating for any family, but having someone there who eases the pain can really make a difference.
David Heard, of Appledore, was so overwhelmed by the compassion of Martin Padmore, healthcare assistant on the Alex ward at North Devon District Hospital (NDDH), that he has nominated him for a Healthcare Hero award.
Mr Heard said Martin was the one who really stood out when his mother and mother-in-law were being cared for on the ward and no request was too much.
He said: “Not only did he care for both of our loved ones, he also took time to spend with the family and brought comfort to us when we needed it the most.

“He didn’t feel like an outsider looking in and although it was a sad and hard time for the family, Martin made this easier with a friendly face and a kind word.
“We felt like we developed a good relationship with Martin during these times and would like him to be recognised for this as he did make our hard time seem a little bit easier, knowing that if we had to leave for whatever reason he was there to look after our loved ones.”

Since launching the Healthcare Hero awards with the Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust two weeks ago, the Gazette has had a flurry of nominations.
Jo Williams, a staff nurse of Fortescue Ward at NDDH, was nominated for an award by her colleague Nadine Deacon.
Nadine said: “She is the best nurse I know; she is so very caring to all staff and patients.
“Jo goes out of her way to treat patients with the respect and care they deserve and need.
“She is always happy and always cares for the patients; she is a big team player and a real mother figure of the ward.
“Jo’s always there for everyone else and I just wanted to do something nice for her to show her that her hard work and caring nature is truly amazing.”
Another nominee this week is Jo Gordon, gynaecology clinical nurse specialist at NDDH.
Angela Gratton, from Barnstaple, said of Jo: “She has been so supportive to me in a difficult time.
“Jo is also very efficient at her job. If she says she will get something sorted it is done immediately. Thank you Jo.”
The nominations are open to any member of staff, from doctors and therapists to porters and cleaners – although GP surgeries are not included.
