The North Devon Gazette takes a tour around the new McCarthy and Stone retirement apartment complex on the Cliffe Hydro site.

AS Ilfracombe’s new Lantern Court development on the site of the former Cliffe Hydro Hotel nears completion, the North Devon Gazette has been given a guided tour.

Perched on the edge of a cliff, the 42 apartment complex for the over-60s constructed by McCarthy and Stone is expected to be open for public viewing at the end of May.

The Gazette was given the opportunity to become one of the first apart from company staff to see inside the building. The coastal facing apartments have unobstructed sea views to die for, looking across the length of Ilfracombe Harbour and beyond.

Such is the attraction that developers report an expected 10 reservations on the one and two-bedroom apartments, with more than 40 preview appointments booked by potential buyers prior to a public opening.

The complex has an underground parking area, communal seaward-facing lounge and outdoor decking area, plus there will be a house manager permanently on site.

Prices range from £139,950 to £299,950 for one bedroom apartments and from £249,950 up to £415,950 for the two bedroom variety.

Following the demolition of the derelict and fire hit former Victorian Cliffe Hydro Hotel, the site needed extensive and specialised construction work.

Senior site manager James Day said it was an unusual building and a first for the company, which departed from its traditional building methods and used a number of different construction elements due to the nature of the project.

He said they had now been on site for 20 months, with delays caused by the extreme conditions of the previous winter.
