Guardsman John Bradley 22 (aka Bez) is from Ilfracombe and is serving with the 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards situated in Forward Operation Base Arnhem, Helmand Province. The former Ilfracombe College pupil is now a trained mortar specialist and has been serving with the battalion for more than three years. This is Bradley's second operational tour, his first being Iraq and he commented: "It's a very challenging job being out here. It's hot during the day and freezing at night but my mates are here with me and we just get on with it. We just want to get through it so we can all get home safely."Guardsman Bradley's family all come from Ilfracombe and when asked about them he remarked: "My family worry about me but they are proud of what I do and know that I am fighting alongside my mates. They write to me often and it's great to read about what's happening back home."The 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards have recently deployed to Afghanistan and will return in April. "I joined the Coldstream Guards not knowing what to expect, but now I am out here and working with the other guys I wouldn't change it for anything," he said."Being the one who is called to provide protection to our boys out on the ground is a huge responsibility. They call for our support when they need it and when we start firing the enemy quickly changes its mind about continuing the attack. "I can tell you the guys out on patrol really appreciate that.
