SIR - Have I missed something vital? Have we (the country that is) gone vegetarian during the time the Labour Government has been in charge of the purse strings?Hence the idea proposed to cut meat from hospital meals. I was under the impression mankind was still a meat-eating animal. Do we evolve into a vegetarian when we go into hospital? Does that aid recovery?I can understand local sourcing of fresh vegetables, in fact I did suggest to my local hospital that they lose the multitude of staff cars underground and use the land to create biomes (Eden style) in which to grow their own fruit and vegetables to supply not only the hospital, but other satellite agencies.I even went to a meeting of those in charge to listen to any plans envisaged as I was told my suggestion was in the pot along with everyone else's. I lost interest as it was too bureaucratic for me and there was no pot of ideas. We have all the answers. We are an enterprising nation at heart. It's a pity we let so many hitchhikers get on board to cadge a ride on the backs of the movers and shakers we produce naturally in our country.Obviously, we must always include into the answer to our problems what we can source locally by way of meat and fish to not only aid recovery to hospital patients, but to keep those two vital industries going especially here in Devon.I don't want to go vegetarian, even in the short term, whatever the Government wants.S M Nutton,North Devon.
