Vehicles mobilised as A361 begins to wilt under high temperatures

Council gritting lorries have been spotted on the A361 North Devon Link Road – but it’s soaring temperatures rather than snow and ice that have woken the fleet from its summer hibernation.

The vehicles have been spotted on the Exeter-bound carriageway near the Knowstone junction – creating steam and delays.

But with the mercury topping 30C during this week’s mini heatwave, Devon County Council said the work was necessary to stop the road from melting.

A spokesperson said: “Due to the very high temperatures we have been applying fine sand in order to help prevent the bitumen from ‘bleeding’ through the newly laid chippings on surface dressed roads, including the North Devon Link Road.

“This is a precautionary measure and we are monitoring all main roads across the county which have recently been surface dressed.”
