The future of North Devons green recycling bins was brought up at the North Devon full Council meeting yesterday (Wednesday). Councillor Rodney Cann, the portfolio holder for rubbish, waste and recycling was quizzed by Councillor John Matthews on whether the collection service would be safeguarded from the extensive spending cuts forced upon the council by the government. It is a very expensive service and we are considering our options, said Mr Cann. But we consider it a frontline service and I would be very cautious about doing this. A charge could be considered and there are savings to be made within the recycling services. The possible move could be part of the £2 million in extra savings the council will have to make to balance the budget in light of the governments recent spending review. Councillor Brian Greenslade said: Now we have seen the spending review we can pull it together and give an upfront report on where we are and where we need to be. Some of the things we do we will not be able to continue to do.
