Great Torrington was transformed into Whoville yesterday (Saturday) to celebrate the Christmas lights switch on - check out our photos from the day here.

The Grinch paid a visit to Great Torrington yesterday (Saturday) as the town celebrated a Christmas ‘Who-billation’.

Traders transformed the town square into ‘Whoville’ for the festive-themed fair, which saw delighted visitors get into the Christmas spirit.

The Grinch was the star of the show, making young children giggle with glee as he shared his ‘naughty list’ stolen from Santa.

Matt Whittaker, who took on the role of The Grinch, said: “It’s been a real success; the church is full for the Christmas fair and it’s been really good.

“I’ve been sharing Santa’s naughty list with children, which the town mayor Sue Mills is on.

“I’ve only made two children cry, so that is good!”

Town councillor Chris Bright also got into the festive spirit with a Grinch-inspired costume.

He said: “The whole event speaks for itself, it’s just brilliant.

“I’ve been running the plate smashing stand which is great fun, I can’t believe how many people have come out, it’s amazing.”

Stilt walker ‘Star’ from Higher Beings delighted the crowds with his sparkling attire, and choirs sung festive tunes.

The Rotary Club was selling raffle tickets and inside the parish church was a Christmas fair with a chance to visit Father Christmas.

The undercroft of the town hall was also transformed into a festive grotto, with queues of children waiting outside.
