Firefighters from across North Devon have been called to a grassland fire in Parracombe this afternoon (Wednesday).

A crew from Barnstaple was sent to the fire behind Hiddon View at 12.40pm along with one from Ilfracombe.

When they arrived they immediately requested three more appliances and extra crew, with another from Barnstaple as well as appliances from Braunton and Lynton joining.

A statement from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: “Crews got to working immediately to extinguish the fire with the use of five hose reel jets and beaters.

“The crew are making steady progress to extinguish the fire however they are still fire fighting.”

Update: Crews carried on dampening hotspots and remained in attendance until around 10pm.
