A NORTH Devon grandmother has been left "spellbound" by her grandson's high-flying acrobatic skills in the final of Britain's Got Talent.

Freda Lane, from Barnstaple, was among an estimated 12 million viewers watching the grand finale of the television talent competition last week; but while act Spellbound mesmerised Simon Cowell and fellow judges, it was 15-year-old Jonathan Stranks who stole the show for proud Freda.

Jonathan, one of the younger members of the 13-strong troupe, wowed audiences with carefully-choreographed routines that included pendulum swings, human skipping ropes and multiple somersaults.

"I was so excited and nervous before the final that I forgot to press the record button," said Freda, who has travelled the world to watch her grandson compete in various championships.

"I've seen Jonathan fall in a world championship, so I know what can go wrong.

"He is used to competition pressure but I didn't know how he'd handle performing in front of a live television audience of millions."

Jonathan - who is a former British, European and World junior men's pairs champion - trains for 22 hours a week, every day except Sunday.

"It's very difficult to get hold of him as he leaves the house at 6am every day to train before school," added Freda, who used to teach PE at the Marist Convent in Barnstaple.

"He's busy being interviewed and preparing for the Britain's Got Talent tour but I did manage to catch him on the phone as he came in the door the other day to tell him how proud I was of him."

Freda - whose daughter, Jonathan's mother Tessa Norman, was born and bred in Barnstaple, but now lives in Surrey - will get the chance to properly congratulate her grandson when she flies out to Poland to watch him compete in the World Championships after the tour finishes next month.
