GOLFERS at Portmore Golf Club in Barnstaple have "putt" hands in pockets to help charities. At the 18-hole club Christmas competition, members were asked to bring small gifts instead of the usual entry fee, to help support Age Concern Barnstaple and District, plus Barnstaple Poverty Action Group.Toiletries, food, clothing and other useful items all formed part of the generous donation. The club helps many good causes throughout the year, including individual Captain's Charities and one-off events.Ladies Captain Karen Thomas and Junior Captain Mitchell Woods presented gifts at Age Concern Barnstaple in Litchdon Street.Director Andrea Scott was delighted by the club's generosity and said the donation would not only help older people at Christmas but also support the work of Age Concern throughout the year.In one week alone the charity would provide direct assistance or services to around 230 people in and around the town, she said."That can be anything from helping older people with shopping, visiting them, or driving them to medical or other appointments," she said."The aim is enable people to stay in their own homes as long as possible."Find out more about Age Concern Barnstaple by calling into 1 Litchdon Street or telephoning (01271) 324488.
