Towns and villages across the region celebrate success with the South West in Bloom competition

Ilfracombe is celebrating following golden praise from the judges in this year’s South West in Bloom competition.

The town won gold in its category, as well as the Barry Cruse Trophy for the best website, which is designed by Barbara Clarke.

Berrynarbor also won gold, as did Clovelly, while Torrington and Hele Community Group won silver gilt pennants.

The Great Torrington Rosemoor Allotment Scheme also won the West Country TV Cup for ‘outstanding specific project’.

Among the It’s Your Neighbourhood section of the awards, the project at Community Resources at Hele was named outstanding, while Cow Green and St Philip and St James Church in Ilfracombe were rated as ‘thriving’.

Judges were full of praise for the town, saying: “Ilfracombe is a ‘hardy perennial’ when it comes to Bloom. The town has much to offer and the Bloom community is like a well-oiled machine. Many aspects of Ilfracombe represent excellence and best practise and it would be unthinkable to visit Ilfracombe without thinking about Bloom.”

Ilfracombe committee chairman Ivan Frances added: “I am really thrilled. With all the hard work that we put in, this result is well deserved by my team.

“I am just hoping we are going to get three in a row this time.”
