Support the Big Purple Day on July 13 and make a difference to the North Devon Chemotherapy Appeal.
PURPLE power is set to swing into action to help boost the North Devon Chemotherapy Appeal towards the magic million pound mark.
On Friday, July 13 appeal organisers are holding the Big Purple Day, with people across the region invited make a donation and wear something purple or stage purple-tinged events.
Fund-raising manager Ian Roome said the appeal total stood at an impressive £850,000 and was steadily making its way toward the £2.2 million needed to build a brand new chemotherapy and day treatment unit at North Devon District Hospital in Barnstaple.
“It is a fantastic achievement so far, with the whole community really getting behind it and we would like to keep the appeal in people’s minds,” he said.
“We hope the ‘purple push’ will be a massive boost to help take the appeal over the million mark and almost halfway towards our target.”
Mr Roome said he would love to see the kind of response North Devon makes each year for Children in Need, with individuals, schools, businesses and organisations all going ‘purple potty’ for the day.
“It can be anything you like from baking cakes with purple icing to wearing purple wigs – in fact any wacky or fun ideas you can think of with a purple theme,” he said.
Staff at the hospital will be wearing ribbons or other purple apparel on the day where it does not interfere with clinical roles.
Hospital visitors can purchase ribbons at the shop in the foyer or from the chemo unit, as well as tickets for a grand draw to win a hamper of purple goodies.
Mr Roome said they were constantly overwhelmed at the generosity of local people for such a worthy cause: “We still have a long way to go but it will be a massive realisation for generations of North Devon people to come who face the fight with cancer, but will have the support and reassurance of receiving treatment in a fantastic facility,” he said.
