The application for a free school in North Devon has been approved.

A new parent-led school for North Devon has been given the go-ahead to open its doors next year.

Plans for the Route 39 free school have been approved by the Prime Minister and Education secretary Michael Gove.

The 500 place secondary school will be situated between Welcombe and Bucks Cross, and aims to open to the first year 7 group in September 2013.

Emma Morrison, from Route 39, said: “We are over the moon. This affirmation from the government is an incredible moment for us.

“We’ve all put our lives on hold for over a year to work on this project, and have put every last ounce of energy into it.

“We’d like to thank all of the 438 local families who put their faith in us, and by signing up to the proposal made this new school happen.”

Route 39 is the only free school to be approved for opening in 2013 in North Devon, and one of only three in the whole county.
