HUNDREDS of messages of support have been posted on a Facebook page dedicated to a Barnstaple youngster who suffered serious head and back injuries after crashing his mountain bike. Ben Foulds, 18, is in a critical, but stable condition after losing control and colliding with a wall and railings while riding down Old Sticklepath Hill on Tuesday, November 2. He was thrown from his cycle and over the railings on to the road around 15ft below. Since the accident, nearly 500 people have joined a Facebook page called Get Well Soon Ben Foulds. Dad Andy Foulds said on Facebook that Ben had already had operations and would probably remain under sedation until later this week when doctors would operate on his spine. Ben is still in a critical, but stable condition but the hospital staff are happy with his progress so far, he said. On Saturday morning, he gave my hand a squeeze every now and again in response to me talking to him which is a good sign; the fact he is reacting is such a huge step, but its very slow progress so far and it will be a while before anyone can visit. We are currently waiting for results on a full body MRI scan and we will know more then. All the support is fantastic. Ben would be happy to see how many people are behind him. We cant thank people enough. Ben was initially taken to North Devon District Hospital and later transferred to Derriford by helicopter. Mr Foulds thanked witnesses who had already given statements to the police but urged anyone with any information who hadnt yet contacted the police to step forward. Its important we know as much as possible about the accident and how it happened, he said. Any witnesses to the collision are asked to contact the Police on 08452 777 444, quoting log number 646 021110.
