Gas leak closes Bideford roads

Old Town and Meddon Street in Bideford were both closed to through traffic on Saturday night after a vehicle collided with the side of a property, severing the incoming gas mains and damaging the gas meter box.

The incident, which happened at around 11.40pm, was at the junction of Old Town, Meddon Street, and Clovelly Road and the surrounding area was cordoned off by the police as a safety precaution due to the escaping gas.

One fire appliance from the Bideford station was sent to the incident and the crew were able to seal off the gas leak and help keep the area clear, while awaiting the arrival of Wales and West Utilities. The fire crew remained on the scene for two hours as a precautionary measure, reassuring local residents, while the repair to the gas supply was being carried out.
