A full scale emergency developed in Torrington today (Friday) after serious damage was done to the main gas feed into the town.It is understood that a contractor working on behalf of Torrington Golf Club accidentally damaged the pipeline while carrying out earthworks on the course.Wales and West Utilities, which maintains the gas network, issued an urgent message to gas users in the town to switch off their appliances immediately. At first, it was thought consumers in Weare Giffard might also be affected, but this was later found not to be the case. The Wales and West Utilities press release stated: "The co-operation of local residents is essential and we are asking all those who have mains gas supplied to their home or business to turn off the gas immediately and not to switch back on until notified."If necessary WWU's engineers will be attempting to access all properties in the area to switch off supplies as quickly as possible."It is important to stress that there is absolutely no danger to local people. The move to switch off gas supplies is to avoid long delays in re-connecting people when the damage has been rectified."It is understood that the golf course could be closed all weekend due to the incident.Engineers are on site and work will continue all night.
