A cancer patient from Chulmleigh has raised £8,000 for a new cancer and wellbeing centre in North Devon in just six weeks.

A Chulmleigh cancer patient has raised an amazing £8,000 for the new cancer and wellbeing centre appeal in just six weeks.

We reported last month how Gail Stoneman, 41, is hoping to take on seven challenges for the Over and Above appeal, even while she is still undergoing chemotherapy.

Gail has been receiving treatment for seven years. She has seen at first-hand how the Seamoor Unit chemotherapy building has been transformed from an old out-patient unit to the new state-of-the-art building where are patients are treated today.

The idea for the seven challenges came to mark the seventh year since she was first diagnosed with ovarian and endometrial cancers.

It was started off by her friend Tim Garrett who took part in the Bristol Half Marathon and raised £545, followed by Gail’s friend and work colleague Maria Smith’s cake sale at Brend’s head office where they both work raising a further £150.

The icing on the cake was an auction of promises at Chulmleigh Golf Course which raised an astonishing £7,033.46, to take her total to £7,728.46.

Gail said: “The new Seamoor Chemotherapy Unit is so much better than the old unit – it is bright and welcoming. As soon as I heard there was an opportunity for North Devon to have a Cancer and Wellbeing Centre Appeal I wanted to help raise funds for it because I’ve used the Force Centre in Exeter and it was brilliant. It was great to chat to other people, to the nurses and have a cup a tea. I can’t wait for a similar unit to be built in Barnstaple so that patients like me do not have to travel so far.”

The new Cancer and Wellbeing Centre will provide support for patients and their families with cancer and other illnesses as a dedicated space offering a wide range of support services and information in a comfortable and welcoming environment.

Over and Above fundraiser Julie Whitton said: “Gail’s dedication to her fundraising is overwhelming. She is a remarkable lady and it is because of our patients like Gail that we are determined to make this Centre a reality.”
