Councillors express concerns over future of ‘major’ building as Torridge works to move staff out.

Councillors have expressed concerns over the future of Bideford's Bridge Buildings.

Torridge District Council launched a consultation last month over moving its staff from Bridge Buildings and Bideford Town Hall to a new 'customer hub' at Riverbank House.

But Bideford town councillors said they feared for the future of the buildings at a full council meeting on Thursday evening.

Councillor Peter Christie said: "I propose we write to Torridge and ask what is going to happen to these major Bideford buildings."

Speaking outside of the meeting, Councillor Jane Whittaker, leader of Torridge, said the town hall would still be used for meetings as it is now, but Bridge Buildings was 'work in progress'.

She added: "Members have ideas, from renting it out to converting it or even selling it.

"That's a secondary issue to making sure our 'one stop shop' works for the public."

The eight-week consultation is open until September 21, and available to view at Riverbank House or at www.torridge.gov.uk.
