More nominations in the Healthcare Hero Awards, but who is your unsung here? Find out to nominate them here...
THE Healthcare Hero awards are designed to recognise unsung heroes in North Devon, but one nomination has come in for a whole group of people.
Teresa Sturm, senior staff nurse at North Devon District Hospital, wanted the partners and families of staff at NDDH to be recognised for their support.
She said: “There are so many members of staff at North Devon District Hospital that deserve to be nominated for this award who are passionate, dedicated and inspirational.
“But I felt compelled to write to give some recognition to the unsung heroes – the families who support us when we work long hours, Christmas and New Year.
“Nursing is very rewarding but can be hard at times so I would like to nominate all the families as their continued support is crucial as they take care of us when we get home from a tiring 12-hour shift, cuddle us when we have had a tough day and run a bath when we ache.”
Also nominated this week was Gemma Scoines, a domestic on Fortescue ward at NDDH.
Suzanne Robson, who works on Fortescue ward and nominated Gemma, said she ‘had a heart of gold’ which shone through during one emergency situation.
“When a man attending the urology clinic collapsed, she remained calm, alerted nursing staff and assisted in getting the crash trolley,” said Suzanne.
“She was quick to act and stayed to help despite it not being her ‘role’ to do so. She showed compassion and a true sense of patient care.”
Another nominee from Fortescue ward was Jo Williams, a staff nurses.
Nadine Deacon, a healthcare assistant on the ward, nominated Jo for being ‘the best nurse I know’.
Nadine said: “She goes out of her way to treat patients with the respect and care they deserve and need.
“She is a big team player and a real mother figure of the ward.
“She’s always there for everyone else and I just wanted to do something nice for her to show her that her hard work and caring nature is truly amazing.”
The awards, run by the Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust in association with the Gazette, are open for any of the 4,500 employees across North Devon and Torridge.
