Joanne Bell and Doctor Elizabeth Gill will contest the vacancy in the Fremington and Yelland ward following the resignation of previous chairman David Jury. It is the only election being called following the mass resignation of six councillors in September. The other five vacancies will be filled by co-option. Former parish councillor and environmental campaigner Mrs Bell said she was standing because I believe passionately in democracy, free speech and treating others with respect. I consider these concepts have long since been abandoned on this council, she said. I do not belong to any political party, I refused to vote in the last general election and am fed up with all parties. Dr Gill is the wife of current council chairman John Gill and she works at a number of hospital clinics across Northern Devon. As a resident of Fremington I am very keen to contribute to the parish council, to do what I can to support them, she said. I think I can bring a certain balance to the council as someone who enjoys living here, as a mother and as a full time worker. Fremington will go to the polls next May along with most of the rest of the country for local elections.
