Corroded steel beams are being replaced at old railway viaduct

Ongoing repairs to the Fremington Viaduct could take a further three months to complete.

Work to repair and repaint the Tarka Trail bridge started in October and is expected to be finished in May, according to Devon County Council.

The scheme includes the replacement of some corroded supporting steel beams.

The iron bridge opened in 1855 with the expansion of the railway from Barnstaple to Bideford. It carried freight trains until 1982 but is now a popular route for walkers and cyclists.

The bridge remains open while repairs are carried out.
