The nationwide festival, supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery, has hundreds of free walks on offer across Britain and 49 in Devon alone.

Local highlights include a varied Parracombe area walk on May 26, taking in prehistoric barrows and Woody Bay Station, plus a Tarka Trail stroll from Monkleigh to Frithelstock on May 29.

A Taw Valley walks sets off on June 2 from Umberleigh Village Hall and there is a long Exmoor walk on June 3.

Group chairman and one of the walk leaders, Joan Long, said: “Anyone who loves walking will already know that one can see so much more of the countryside on foot. It could be fantastic views, quirky old buildings with lots of history or a special picnic spot.
