Footballers young and old laced up their boots on Sunday in memory of a former North Devon football coach who lost his battle to cancer.
Ken Green, who died on December 27 last year, aged 59, ran a junior football team in Braunton after moving to the area from the West Midlands, where he set up junior football clubs.
He also ran the Grosvenor FC adult team in the North Devon Football League, and former players were among those who took part in a special memorial match against Barnstaple FC as part of the Ken Green Football Festival.
The all-day event at Tews Lane in Barnstaple raised more than £2,000 for North Devon Hospice, which supported Ken and his family during his illness.
Before the adult match, there were youth games for Barnstaple Youth FC’s under 8s, under 10s and under 13s against teams from Fremington Youth, Bideford AFC, Shamwickshire Youth and Braunton United.
The football festival was sponsored by The Wright Property, with support from dozens of local businesses, including Robert Withecombe Butchers, which donated meat for the barbecue.
Ken’s daughter Kelly Saunders, who organised the event with brother Lee and family, said her father would have loved the event.
“He loved watching football and always encouraged children to have a focus on football and had time for all children of all abilities and encouraged them to develop their skills,” she said.
“This is an event we would like to do each year; we would like to say a big thank you to people who helped on the day, provided food, equipment and facilities and donations.”
The family also thanked the following businesses and organisations: Barnstaple Youth Football Club; The Wright Property; Robert Withecombe Butchers; East and West Bakery; Country Cottage Bakery; Theatre Royal Plymouth; Dartington Crystal; RHS Rosemoor; Keypitts Off-Road Adventure; Exeter Chiefs; The Beauty Barn; Lets Go Superbowl; Yeovil Town Football Club; The Park Hotel; The Milky Way Adventure Park; Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park; Hockings Ice Cream; The Coffee Cabin; Kudos; Quince Honey Farm; The Fox and Hounds; Air Extreme; Exeter City FC; Louisa Ley; Asda Bideford; Asda Barnstaple; Tesco Bideford; Morrisons Bideford; Grant Watt.
