Flood alerts have been put in place across North Devon as thunderstorms are set to sweep into the area.

The Environment Agency has issued flood alerts for Barnstaple, Braunton, Ilfracombe and Combe Martin, as well as Exmoor Rivers from Lynton to South Molton.

The alerts run alongside the Met Office’s amber warning for rain and thunderstorms this evening and into tomorrow (Friday) morning.

Rainfall is expected to cause localised flooding, as well as ‘significant surface water’ on the roads.

A statement from the Environment Agency said: “We expect smaller rivers and their tributaries to react quickly to this rainfall causing localised flooding in some areas, there is also like to be significant surface water flooding in some areas.

“Flooding to low lying land and roads both from surface water and localised river flooding is expected. Take care near the areas of concern particularly if driving and monitor your local weather conditions.

“We are constantly monitoring river levels and have staff in the area checking for and clearing blockages in this location.”
