TK Maxx sponsorship secures spectacular showdown for town’s premier charity parade

Barnstaple carnival will finish with a fabulous fireworks display on Saturday night – thanks to eleventh-hour support from the town’s TK Maxx store.

The Green Lanes discount retailer has donated £2,500 to be the lead sponsor of this year’s carnival, which starts at 6pm.

Carnival committee chairman John White thanked store manager Ian Holloway and said the fireworks would provide a fitting finale to what is shaping up to be one of the biggest carnivals in many years.

“We have more than 40 procession entries already registered and many more coming in every day,” said Mr White.

“We would like to put out a last request for entries to be completed as soon as possible and for the local community to get your glad rags on and come out into the town to celebrate and congratulate all of the entries for their hard work.

“And don’t forget to get your spare change at the ready to make your generous donations to the many local charities that the carnival supports.”

The Strand will be packed with street food stalls from 10am on the day, as well as face painting and balloon modelling stalls.

A children’s carnival, led by John Fowler Holidays mascots Freddy Fox and Trixie Rabbit, will set off from the bottom of Cross Street at 3.30pm, following judging at 3pm.

Judging for the main procession takes place from 4.45pm and carnival queen Liberty Sheldon will be crowned at 5.30pm outside the heritage centre. Liberty will be attended by carnival princesses Skye Piper and Evie Rose-Wall.

The fireworks will be launched from the Anchorwood Bank site at 8pm and spectators are being encouraged to watch the display from the strand, civic centre car park bridge, or Taw Vale.

“Whether you take part, spectate or donate – we don’t mind – as long as you make sure that you’re part of it,” added Mr White.
