Two fire appliances from Bideford were called to Littlejohns Coal at Westcombe Road just before 5.30am, where they found a number of wooden pallets ablaze, mixed in with coal dust.

The fire generated a great deal of smoke but was soon extinguished with two hose reels plus a water jet. The cause of the blaze is still unknown.

Linda Littlejohns at the business said the damage had only been superficial and both the coal merchants and Littlejohns Fireside parts of the firm had been open as normal on Saturday morning.
