A fire alarm saved the day for residents of a three storey terraced property in Barnstaple after it caught fire earlier today (Friday.)

Fire crews were called to the house at Sticklepath Terrace just after 11am and originally feared someone was still trapped inside, but everyone was soon accounted for.

They immediately set about tackling the first floor blaze and at its height two Barnstaple fire crews plus one from Braunton and the aerial ladder - totalling around 20 fire fighters - were involved.

Thanks to the alarm and a swift response, the fire in the multi occupancy buidling was restricted to one room and did not spread.

"The thing that really saved the day was the recently installed alarm system," said incident commander Mark Sanders from Barnstaple Fire Station.

"Not only did it protect the occupants, but also those in other parts of the building who would not have known about the fire. If the system had not been there, who knows how long it would have been until it was detected."

The cause of the fire is being investigated. Free safety checks and fire prevention advice are available by calling 0800 7311 822.
