A potential environmental catastrophe was averted by fire fighters following a spill of highly toxic and corrosive chemicals at Hatchmoor Industrial estate in Torrington.

Crews from Torrington, Bideford and Barnstaple were called out to the premises of Tamar Trading Limited at about 10.30am this morning (Monday) after the spillage from a 20 litre drum of sodium hypochlorite.

Six fire fighters donned gas tight suits and breathing apparatus while a chemical spill pack of powders and was used to soak up the substance. It was then shovelled into a container and taken away for safe disposal.
