SHOPPERS and market traders in Barnstaple will miss the familiar figure of Mrs Lily Lefever, who died at 101 in the district hospital after a brief illness.Friday was a regular shopping day for Lily, who went into town from Newport on the community bus and was taken round in her wheelchair by voluntary escorts of Shopmobility Go - the service she called "a godsend".A Londoner from Palmers Green, Lily became a secretary when she left school. Even at a century, she could still read and write Pitman's shorthand.Lily, who lived in Water Lane Close, came to North Devon to be near relatives after her husband died. For years, she was an active member of Newport Methodist Church women's group and enjoyed rounding off her weekly shopping sprees with a cup of tea in the Friday Cafe at Christ Church in Bear Street.
