THE new owners of an award winning caravan site in North Devon have come to the end of their successful first season.

Ray and Carol Legg, with their son, Andy, are fulfilling a lifetime's ambition to run a touring park at the five-star Hidden Valley at West Down, near Ilfracombe.

Mr Legg, aged 61, had spent a lifetime in the automotive electrical and car battery business in London, but illness forced him to look at an alternative lifestyle.

He said: "Carol and I have always been enthusiastic caravanners and dreamt of owning our own touring park when we first got married. When we decided upon a change of direction, it was no surprise that we began to look at holiday parks, especially as we could include other members of the family and plan some kind of succession.

"We took our time, though, to make sure we got it all exactly right spending over three years looking for the right business."

Carol Legg added: "Hidden Valley is a wonderful place with its own lake, woods, landscaped gardens children's play parks and nature trail with a wonderful diversity of plants, animals, birds and butterflies on 27 acres of land.

"We don't aim to change the park with large scale and unnecessary investment. We see ourselves as guardians of this beautiful place's future and only want to enhance our guests' experiences making improvements where needed and leaving nature to speak for itself."

The acquisition of Hidden Valley was supported by Clydesdale Bank where partner Steve Tyers said: "Ray, Carol and Andy are determined to be successful at Hidden Valley. They have already developed a very personal touch and rapport with visitors and they live on site which is a great help.

"In business terms, Hidden Valley has a lot of potential without changing too much. The intention is to increase year round visits especially in the winter months and, because it occupies such a prominent location on the A361 between Braunton and Ilfracombe, to encourage non-residents to enjoy the considerable coffee shop at the site reception."
