Bogus workmen stole ‘precious’ coin collection from elderly Bideford couple

Police are appealing for witnesses after men tricked their way into the house in Moreton Park Road and stole jewellery and a coin collection.

Police are appealing for information after two bogus workmen tricked their way into the home of an elderly Bideford couple and stole a commemorative coin collection.

The men called at the property in Moreton Park Road yesterday (Sunday) afternoon, pretending to be checking on the water supply.

While the occupier was distracted by one offender, the other searched an upstairs bedroom.

It was later discovered that costume jewellery and the couple’s precious coin collection had been taken.

Among the collection were 50p, £5 and £20 coins depicting commemorative occasions such as the Olympics, the Queen on horseback, the Queen’s 90th birthday, Sir Winston Churchill, and the birth of Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

Police are investigating and urging anyone who may have seen the suspects in the area at the time to come forward.

The main offender is described as a white man, aged 40-55, about 5ft 5ins tall, and of pale complexion. He was wearing a flat cap and a blue raincoat, and spoke with an Irish accent.
